The Senate has resolved to write the Chief Justice of the Federation, Justice Walter Onnoghen, to express their reservations about the judgment by a Federal High Court stopping the National Assembly from overriding President Muhammadu Buhari’s veto on the amended Electoral Act.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Wednesday said President Muhammadu Buhari has lost control of his Service Chiefs, following the flagrant disregard to his directive by the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris to relocate to Benue state to put an end to incessant killings by suspected herdsmen.

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has barred the National Assembly from taking further action or proceeding with the Electoral Act Amendment Bill.

The restraining order was issued on Wednesday, March 14, by Justice Ahmed Mohammed of the High Court.

This ruling is a sequel to an oral application made in a suit filed by the Accord Party against the National Assembly, the Attorney General of the Federation, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

In the ruling, the court ordered the parties to “maintain status quo ante bellum” that stays every proceeding pending the determination of the motion on notice filed by the Accord party.

The House of Representatives has insisted that it has the constitutional power to legislate on the sequence of elections to be conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC. Chairman, House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Abdulrazak Namdas, made the declaration while briefing the National Assembly Correspondents on the House’s stand on the matter.

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr Adewale Hameed, on Wednesday urged a Federal High Court in Lagos to declare the purported tenure elongation of APC’s national officers as unconstitutional.

Listed as the defendants are Mr John Odigie, National Chairman of APC, Mr Segun Oni, Deputy National Chairman (South ) and Senator Lawal Shaibu, Deputy National Chairman (North).

Others are Mr Ibrahim Gubi, National Secretary, Mr Pius Akinyelure, Vice-Chairman (South-west) as the fourth and fifth defendants.

Senator representing Kogi West, Dino Melaye says Yahaya Bello, governor of Kogi state, may have introduced state police “through the back door”.

Speaking on the floor of the Senate on Wednesday, Melaye said the vigilante service law that has already been signed by the governor is an affront to the constitution.

The senator said the law is in conflict with section 214 of the constitution that established the Nigerian police force.

“I bring to the Senate a plan, action of Kogi state government to introduce state police through the back door,” Melaye said.
