INEC Rules Out Extension Of Voters Registration

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), on Saturday, ruled out the possibility of extending the ongoing continuous voter’s registration (CVR) exercise, scheduled to end on July 31, 2022. INEC National Commissioner in charge of Voter Education and Publicity, Barr. Festus Okoye, disclosed this in Awka, Anambra State while interacting with some journalists. He noted that the CVR would be brought to an end in order to enable the commission to carry on with its other constitutional responsibilities.

NBA Elects Yakubu Maikyau As New President

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has elected Yakubu Maikyau, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), as the 31st President of the association. Maikyau who will be taking over from Olumide Akpata polled a total of 22, 342 votes, followed closely by fellow SAN, Joe-Kyari Gadzama, Chairman of the NBA Securities Agencies Relations Committee, who polled 10, 842 votes.

Abdulsalami Abubakar, a former Head of State and Chairman of the National Peace Committee (NPC) has stated that any politician planning to contest the 2023 general elections must sign a peace accord. He said, “The pattern of public communication among political actors, their publicity agents, spokespersons, and media consultants have amplified the potential for personal attacks, insults, and incitement. “In view of this, there is a need to promote a culture of healthy issue-based campaigns and political communication. Consequently, the NPC has organized the signing of two Peace Accords for the 2023 general elections”.

President Buhari Confers Nigerian Citizenship On 286 Foreigners

President Muhammadu Buhari, on Thursday, awarded Nigerian citizenship to 286 foreign nationals, during a ceremony at the banquet hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja. During the ceremony Mr. President urging them to be good citizens of the country to enjoy all the rights and privileges bestowed on them. Of the deserving persons who signed to be Nigerians, 208 were conferred citizenship status by naturalization, while the remaining 78 gained their citizenship by registration. ”You have pledged your allegiance to Nigeria. When you give your love and loyalty to Nigeria, she returns her love and loyalty to you,” the President told the beneficiaries during the event. The President explained that out of the 286 foreign nationals presented with certificates of Nigerian Citizenship, 208 received certificates for Naturalisation, while 78 got certificates for Registration.

CVR Exercise: INEC Delists 1.1Mn Ineligible Registrations

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has delisted 1,126,359 registrations out of the 2,523,428 new registrations recorded between 28th June 2021 and 14th January 2022 during the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise. This was disclosed on Monday in a statement issued by Festus Okoye, INEC Head of Information and Voter Education Committee who stated that irregularities were observed during the cleaning up of the voter's register using the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS).
