President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday visited Benue state for the first time after he was voted into power in 2015. His visit followed incessant killings of people in the state by suspected Fulani herdsmen, a development that has attracted widespread reaction locally and internationally with some commentators claiming that the President has done little to curtail the menace of the herdsmen.

President Muhammadu Buhari has arrived Makurdi, the Benue state capital on a one-day official visit. According to a source in Makurdi, the Air Force One that conveyed the President touched down at the Air Force Base about 11:00 am. The President was warmly received by the state governor, Mr. Samuel Ortom, his Commissioners, traditional rulers and other stakeholders in the state.

President Muhammadu Buhari says he is not aware that Ibrahim Idris, Inspector-General of Police, did not heed his instruction in Benue state.

Shortly after 73 persons were killed in January following clashes between farmers and herdsmen, Buhari asked Idris to relocate to Benue.

But when he visited the state on Monday, the president was told that Idris did not spend up to 24 hours in the state.

The U.S. Secretary of State, Mr. Rex Tillerson, is expected to arrive, Abuja today in his first official visit to Nigeria.
