Jonathan, Other African Leaders To Observe Sierra Leone Presidential Election 

Members of the West African Elders Forum (WAEF), led by former President Goodluck Jonathan, have arrived in Freetown Sierra Leone’s capital ahead of the country’s general election billed for Saturday June 24. According to Jonathan the WAEF will work with other stakeholders in Sierra Leone to ensure the election which will be held this weekend is peaceful and credible. Jonathan stated this on his twitter handle shortly after he arrived in Freetown, the capital of the West African country. WAEF consists of former leaders and statesmen who will provide mediation and interlocutory roles in addressing electoral and democratic conflict in the region. The forum was officially inaugurated on March 4, 2021.

Rare Ruby From Mozambique Makes History Sells For $30M+

A 52 carat ruby and a pink diamond have set two world auction records after they were sold for over $30 million in a single sale in New York on Thursday. The ruby named "Estrela de Fura”, a whopping 55.22 carats, was discovered last year in a mine in Mozambique. The record was previously held by the Sunrise Ruby, a 25.59 carat Burmese stone, which sold for 30.3 million dollars (£24,148,191) at Sotheby’s Geneva in May 2015.  Uncut "Estrela de Fura” was 101 carats. The name "Estrela de Fura” means “Star of Fura” in Portuguese. The name refers to the company that mined the stone. Polished rubies of more than five carats are extremely rare.

Ugandan Government Goes Tough on LGBTQ, Impose Death Penalty On Offenders

Ugandan President, Yoweri Museveni had yesterday signed the Ugandan toughest anti-LGBTQ laws proposing the death penalty to perpetual offenders which has provoked widespread condemnation from the West, including the threat of aid withholding. Since the discussion on same-sex relationships started in the West, most African leaders have refused to subscribe to the idea of viewing it with disdain with Uganda inclusive.

Around 40 Students Killed In Ugandan School Attack, Others Abducted 

A school in western Uganda was attacked by ISIL-linked Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels during which about 40 people, mostly students, were gruesomely murdered. An additional eight persons remain in a critical condition after the attack on Lhubiriha secondary school in Mpondwe. Others at the school, mostly girls, have been abducted by the group. Boys who were staying in dormitories at the school are among the dead. Many of the bodies were transferred to Bwera Hospital, national police spokesperson Fred Enanga disclosed. The distressing attack happened around 23:30 local time (20:30 GMT) on Friday at the school in the Kasese district of Uganda by the ADF rebels numbering around 20 according to Uganda’s military. ADF rebels burnt a dormitory, and a food store was also looted during the incident, Mr Enanga added. While some of the boys were burnt, others were hacked with matchets or shot to death, Major General Dick Olum from the Ugandan army told media.

Ousmane Sonko Trial: Nine Killed As Riot Erupts In Senegal

Violence erupted in Senegal’s capital Dakar on Thursday after a court sentenced firebrand opposition leader Ousmane Sonko to two years in jail for “corrupting youth,” a move that dims his hopes of contesting next year’s presidential election. At least nine people were killed during the clashes between riot police and protesters in Senegal who threw rocks at the police and set buses on fire. The casualties were made known by Interior Minister Antoine Diome in a late-night news conference after a day of violence across the country. The southern city of Ziguinchor, where Sonko is the mayor, was worst hit by the clashes.

The former deputy senate president was sentenced to ten years while his wife received six years sentence in prison.
