Sudan Crisis: Buhari Calls For Ceasefire As Death Toll Rises

Fierce fighting between military and para-military has continued in Sudan’s capital despite a temporary ceasefire to address humanitarian needs including the evacuation of wounded, on the second day of battles that left dozens killed. The death toll among civilians… has reached 97, more than half of them in Khartoum and its suburbs, while “dozens” of military and paramilitary personnel died according to pro-democracy doctors. Over 1000 were wounded on Sunday. The clashes are part of a power struggle between Gen. Abdel-Fattah Burhan, the commander of the armed forces, and Gen. Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, known as “Hemedti”, the head of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) group, thousands of ex-militiamen of the Darfur war who have become official auxiliaries of the regular troops, degenerated into violence on Saturday morning in the streets of this country of 45 million inhabitants, among the poorest in the world, torn by war for decades.

At Least 44 Killed In Burkina Faso Terrorist Attack

About Forty-four civilians have been killed by “armed terrorist groups” in two villages in northeastern Burkina Faso, near the Niger border, a regional governor said on Saturday. Jihadis launched "despicable and barbaric" attacks on the Kourakou and Tondobi villages in Seno province on Thursday and Friday, said Lt Col PF Rodolphe Sorgho. Sorgho said that 31 people had died in Kourakou and 13 in Tondobi. The regional official said that an army offensive put “out of action the armed terrorist groups” that carried out the killings. The governor also assured that “actions to stabilise the area are underway”.

Kenyans Defy Police Warning As Fresh Protests Erupt

Kenyans braced up on Monday for a new round of anti-government protests over the high cost of living after the opposition vowed the action would go ahead despite a police ban. The protesters defied a warning by the Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome that the demonstrations in Nairobi and the western city of Kisumu, an Odinga stronghold, were “illegal”. According to him, the demonstrations planned for Monday are illegal and will not be allowed, adding that his force was ready to keep the peace and would arrest anyone carrying offensive weapons. But veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga, who has called for people to take to the streets Monday and Thursday against President William Ruto over the high cost of living, remained defiant.

Death Toll From Tunisia Boat Mishap Rises To 25

Some 25 persons are now known to have died after their boat coming from sub-Saharan Africa towards Europe was wrecked off the port city of Sfax on Wednesday. Seventy-two of the 110 onboard were rescued, while several others are reported missing. Ten bodies were discovered on Wednesday and fifteen on Thursday, said Tunisian coastguard. Six women were among the dead found on Thursday, including the boat’s Tunisian captain. The country, whose coastline is less than 150 kilometers (90 miles) from the Italian island of Lampedusa, has long been a favored spot for migrants attempting to journey into Europe.

Mudslide Kills 19 In East DR Congo

A landslide has killed about 19 persons in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo on Sunday, residents and local officials in the region said. An official in the village of Bulwa in North Kivu province disclosed that the death toll was likely to increase.
