Senator Abdullahi Adamu, the Chairman Senate Committee on Agriculture on Monday accused All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmakers in the National Assembly of sabotaging President Muhammadu Buhari administration despite being in the majority. Sen. Adamu in a statement issued on Monday also reacted to claims by Senator Obinna Ogba of Ebonyi state that he was plotting to distabilize the senate by conniving with the executive to execute a change in the leadership of the Senate.
He said the Senate was focused on embarrassing him because of his insistence that the National Assembly supports and shows respect to President Muhammadu Buhari.
“I believe we need to retrace our steps and reconsider our stand as legislators on matters of public interest. Our party, APC, has the majority in both chambers of the National Assembly, yet we hold the Executive prisoner of politics that are unhealthy for the polity. It is such a terrible irony that we sabotage our own government by refusing to do our part in support of the Executive.
Appointments requiring Senate approval are held up. The consequence is that the public has nicknamed the President and his administration go-slow. The people gave us the mandate as a party to deliver." Speaking on the allegation that he was plotting Saraki’s removal, Adamu insisted he had no such plans saying;
“If I was interested in contesting the Senate presidency in 2015, nothing would have stopped me from doing so. I was qualified for the office. This is another Unclad lie to tarnish my name. Let me caution that this smear campaign against me is neither in the interest of the Senate nor of the senators.”
The Senator was recently sacked as the Chairman of Northern Senators' Forum over allegation of corruption few days after leading few senators to boycott the passage of the electoral amendment seeking to alter the sequence of the general elections. He had alleged that the amendment was targeted at the President.
Although the issue raised by Senator Ogba had since been given to the Committee on Ethics and Privileges for further investigation, it is envisaged that the Senate might be angered by this recent allegation of sabotage and could take drastic actions against him.
