Following the yellow fever outbreak in Katsina and Bauchi States, the European Union (EU) has pledged to assist Nigeria with N31.8 million to help in combatting the outbreak.  According to health officials, the yellow fever outbreak in the two states has recorded over 30 deaths since the outbreak was traced to the recent visit to the Yankari Game reserve in Bauchi by some individuals in September.

The support fund is aimed at helping the Nigerian government and other donor partners to reduce the spread of the disease.

In a statement, the EU said that the support fund will help the affected communities, adding that the Nigerian Red Cross will be responsible for the disbursement of the funds.

“This EU funding supports the Nigerian Red Cross in delivering much-needed relief assistant to prevent the disease from spreading, including a health promotion awareness campaign on yellow fever and the importance of vaccination against the disease.

“They will also help with active case finding of suspected cases and referral to treatment centres, and the destruction of the breeding ground for mosquitoes.”

The funding is part of the EU's overall contribution to the Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).
