The National Assembly has begun plans to override President Muhammadu Buhari’s Veto on a bill to amend the Electoral Act.

The planned override continued on Tuesday on the floor of the Senate with the re-introduction of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill.

Recall that last week, the House of Representatives also reintroduced the bill.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday assured the United Nation (UN) of his commitment to conducting free, fair and credible elections in 2019. The President gave the assurance when the UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed paid him a courtesy visit in Abuja, according to a note by the UN issued from New York.

The Speaker of Kano State House of Assembly, Alhaji Abdullahi Ata, says the house is in support of President Muhammad Buhari on his refusal to assent to the bill on the amendment of the Electoral Act.

Ata spoke on Monday while answering questions during a live phone-in programme on a local radio station in Kano, Express Radio.

One of the major amendments by the National Assembly changed the sequence of elections, with the National Assembly poll coming first and the presidential last, contrary to INEC’s proposal.

The apology rendered to Nigerians by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) appeared to have been rejected by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), as the Federal Government has said looted funds should be returned rather than the party’s apology.

A statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday quoted the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, challenging the party to show the genuineness of its apology through a discernible change of attitude.

Mohammed said PDP should complete its apology to Nigerians by returning all the funds looted from the public treasury during its 16 years in power.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday, at the inaugural meeting of the Presidential Committee on Food Security, assured that Nigeria would feed its citizens and build an inclusive Nigeria by combating smuggling and dumping of agro-products across the country.

President Buhari expressed delight that the Food Security Council became a reality two weeks after he had announced his intention to “establish and Chair a Presidential level committee that focuses on Food Security.”

He said a key mandate of the Food Security Council will be to continuously assess and enhance infant, but impactful programs, thereby guaranteeing they achieve their full potential and also develop new programs and projects that will protect and indeed, create more jobs in farming, fisheries, animal husbandry and forestry.

Nigerian main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has apologised to Nigerians for what was described as mistakes made while the party was in power prior to the 2015 general elections, the National Chairman of the party, Mr Uche Secondus said this while delivering a keynote address at a national discourse in Abuja.
