Nigeria, UAE Lift Travel Restrictions

The government of Nigeria and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have both agreed to lift travel restrictions between the two countries after reaching a new agreement.

ECOWAS Suspend Burkina Faso After Coup

The West African regional bloc, ECOWAS, has suspended Burkina Faso after a military coup, but will not impose other sanctions for the time being. This was revealed on 28th January 2022 by the Economic Community of West African States after mutinous soldiers imposed a democratically elected President Roch Marc Christian Kabore to resign.

UPDATE: Burkina Faso Military Deposes President Kabore, Suspends Constitution

The Burkina Faso Military has announced that it has deposed President Roch Kabore, seizing control of the country and dissolved the government. In a televised broadcast on Monday, the army said it had taken over the government, suspended the constitution and the National Assembly, as well as closed the country's borders. The announcement, signed by Lieutenant Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba was read by another officer on the state television, noting that the takeover had been carried out without violence and those detained are in a secured location.

Just In: Gunfire Near Guinea-Bissau Presidential Palace

There are fears of a coup attempt in Guinea-Bissau as armed men fired heavy gunshots near the Palace of Government where President Umaro Embalo had been chairing a cabinet meeting on Tuesday. Though details are yet to be confirmed, regional bodies have raised concerns about a suspected coup. The African Union (AU) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) have condemned the situation in the West African country.

Dozens Killed By Tropical Storm Ana In Southern Africa

At least 70 persons have been confirmed dead after a tropical storm Ana struck three Southern African countries of Mozambique, Malawi and Madagascar on Thursday, 27 January 2022. According to authorities 41 people were killed in Madagascar, 18 in Mozambique and 11 in Malawi, In Zimbabwe, no deaths were reported. Government and relief agencies in the three countries are still assessing the extent of damage caused by the heavy storms that started last week along the Indian Ocean coast and in the Mozambique.

Burkina Faso President, Kabore Detained By Military

President of Burkina Faso, Roch Marc Kabore has reportedly been detained at a military camp by mutinying soldiers, following gunfire around the presidential residence in Ouagadougou on Sunday night. The report of his detention came on Monday, a day after soldiers staged mutinies at several army barracks, and later several armoured vehicles of the presidential fleet riddled with bullets holes and abandoned in the street. Kabore's whereabouts are unknown as of the time of this report and the government has denied seize power by the army.
