Mundo Deportivo says La Liga giant Barcelona are trying to convince Lionel Messi to follow the footsteps of Andres Iniesta by signing a 'lifetime contract' with the club, a move that may be intended to dispel rumour that the player could reunite with Pep Guardiola at Manchester City or join Chelsea next summer.

The report further claimed that the Argentine has already signed a new contract extending his stay at Barcelona till 2021 although the deal is yet to be confirmed by both parties. Messi has spent the whole of his senior career in Barcelona playing with world class players like Carles Puyol, Ronaldinho, Thierry Henry, Samuel Eto and Xavi.

The player has won several individual and collective awards including most La Liga goals, most European club goals in a season, five time world footballer of the year, several Champions League trophies and Super Cups among others.

The recent exit of Neymar rattled the club, with fans signing petition calling for the resignation of club President, Josep Maria Bartomeu. He may not want Messi to be snatched again hence ongoing efforts to tie the player down for life.
