National Assembly Endorses 20-year Jail term For Ballot Box Snatchers

The upper chamber of the National Assembly on Tuesday passed a bill seeking to establish the Electoral Offences Commission. This followed the consideration of a report by the Committee on Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Chaired by Senator Kabiru Gaya (APC, Kano). Gaya, in his presentation, noted that establishing the Electoral Offences Commission has become imperative in view of INEC’s inability to prosecute electoral offenders in accordance with the provisions of sections 149 and 150(2) of the Electoral Act (as amended).

2023: Southern Governors Settles For A Southern President

Governors from the Southern States of the country have demanded that the region produces the country’s next president. The governors, cutting across different political parties made their stand in a six-point communiqué issued after a meeting at Ikeja, the Lagos state capital on Monday. The governors unanimously agreed that the presidency seat be alternated between the northern and southern region, adding that the next president must come from the South in the spirit of equity and fairness.

The Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) has suspended its nationwide strike which lasted for over 2 months. The suspension of the strike action was reached during the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on Wednesday, with the union set to resume work on Monday.

The Senate has rejected Lauretta Onochie as a National Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Onochie’s rejection was following the consideration of the report of the Committee on INEC, chaired by Senator Kabiru Gaya (APC, Kano).

APC Extends Buni-Led Caretaker Committee Tenure

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has extended the tenure of Governor Mai Mala Buni-led Caretaker Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee for another six months. The Director-General Press and Media Affairs to Governor Buni, Mamman Mohammed disclosed this in a statement on Friday. Buni visited President Muhammadu Buhari at Aso Rock, where he presented a report of the committee to him. Speaking after receiving the report, Buhari commended the Buni committee and said the APC has been revived, energized, and repositioned for its national convention and future elections.

Gov. Matawalle Dissolves Cabinet, Sacks Other Principal Political Appointees

Governor Bello Mohammed Matawalle of Zamfara State has approved the dissolution of the State Executive Council with immediate effect, the Special Adviser Media and Communications, Zailani Bappa said. The Secretary to the State Government, Chief of Staff, and the Deputy Chief of Staff have also been relieved of their appointments, as well as all Chairmen and members of the State commissions and Boards of various agencies. The sacked executives have been directed to hand over to the most senior director in their various ministries.
