Inadequate Sleep Linked To Anxiety, Depression - Study

A study has found that having less than eight hours sleep daily can lead to anxiety and depression. The new research suggests that insomniacs are less able to overcome negative thoughts than those who get sufficient shut-eye.

The National Headquarters of National Agency for Food and Drug Administration (NAFDAC) located in Zone 7, Wuse District, Abuja has been gutted by fire. The fire incident reportedly started about 6:20 am.  Vigil360 gathered that officials of Fire Service and Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Agency failed to arrive on time to put out the fire. The officials, however, arrived later.  Meanwhile, the relevant agencies are yet to state the cause of the incident.

A Consultant with the University College Hospital, Ibadan, Dr Adebayo Oladeji, has said youths could reduce their cancer risk by 90 percent through healthy living, good diet and exercise. Oladeji, who is of the Oncology Radiation Department, said this while speaking at the annual lecture of the Students Association of Agricultural Extension and Rural Development of the University of Ibadan. The lecture was entitled “Cancer and Your Health.”

Aggressive brain tumours have been effectively treated by injecting viruses into patients, The Independent reports. The treatment, which involved administering viruses into the bloodstream via a drip, works by stimulating the internal defences of patients to fight their tumours. “The presence of cancer in the brain dampens the body’s own immune system,” said Professor Susan Short, an oncologist at the University of Leeds, who led the trial.

The World Health Organization has declared Gabon a “polio-free country”, given the lack of new reported or suspected cases in the central African country. According to a WHO statement obtained by AFP on Saturday, the UN health agency nonetheless recommended taking the necessary steps to continue monitoring for possible signs of the disease. Gabon’s Health Minister Denise Mekam’ne Edzidzie also urged families on Saturday to “continue to immunise children and prevent a resurgence of this disease”.

Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN), an international non-governmental organization says over 50 per cent children in the northern part of the country are suffering from malnutrition. The Country Director of GAIN, Dr. Michael Ojo stated this during a chat with newsmen. He disclosed that his organization was assisting the Federal Government to design and deliver food-based policies and programmes to improve the consumption of safe and nutritious foods in the affected areas.
