Some Senators were on Thursday seen scampering for safety as the Senate Chamber at the National Assembly Complex was gutted by fire. Specifically, the incident affected Room SB 63 Technical Room at the White House, Senate Wing of the National Assembly complex, and sending smoke through the air conditioner pipes to the chamber.
Officials of the Fire Service swiftly responded and have since put out the fire. Preliminary investigation by the Fire Fighters revealed that the inferno was triggered by an electric spark from the technical room of the Senate. It was gathered that the fire started when the Senators were about entering the Chamber for the day's session.
Meanwhile, the Senate has adjourned plenary to Tuesday. Senator Abdullahi Gobir raised a point of order to lament that the chamber was not conducive for the lawmakers.
The Senate President ruled that that the adjournment would allow technicians time to effect repairs.
Meanwhile, no casualty was recorded.
