The House of Representative has yesterday called on President Buhari to give more slots for women in his cabinet to compensate for the gender imbalance in the National Assembly and the recent Ministerial nominees.
A motion sponsored by Omowumi Ogunlola (APC, Ogun) suggested that there is a noticeable shortfall of women occupying political offices in Nigeria, she urges President Buhari to correct the shortfall by appointing more women to head ministry Departments and Agencies (MDAs).
The lawmaker opined that women have always been partners in the political and socio-economic development of any nation, and therefore deserve their rightful position just like their male counterpart.
In her statement, “Nigeria is blessed with women of high academic stature some of whom have leadership qualities and exalted positions with high responsibilities, both in Nigeria and at international organizations,”
According to her, Out of the 469 members of the National Assembly, only 19 are women with 12 of them in the House of Representatives while 7 are in the Senate, which is just 4.1 percent, and far from the international best practices,”
She continued, that the status co does not agree with the resolution of the 1995 Beijing chatter where it was decided that women should be entitled to 35 percent of the position in the government.
