Members of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) may suspend the ongoing industrial action next week following perceived agreement reached between the aggrieved lecturers and the government on Friday. Between Thursday and Friday, the Federal Government delegation led by the Ministers of Education and that of Labour and Employment held a crucial meeting with the leadership of ASUU to resolve contentious issues that necessitated the strike.
After the meeting, both parties agreed on certain areas, leaving room for further negotiation. Meanwhile, the National President of ASUU, Biodun Ogunyemi while speaking with newsmen after the 12 hours meeting on Friday confirmed that the Union and the Government had reached agreement on certain areas stressing that the Union would table the matter before the Congress to allow members take the final decision.
According to him "Now we have some concrete proposal that we will take back to our members for consideration."
The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, also assured students that the demands of ASUU have been addressed and the union would get back to the government in a week after consulting with its members.
A source who spoke with Vigil360 after the meeting hinted that the Union would suspend the strike next week to allow for further negotiation. He stated that the disposition of the government shows some element of seriousness hence the decision to allow government some time to fulfill its part of the agreement.
