The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has made a u-turn on earlier plans to shut down the country following delay by the Federal Government and aggrieved members of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to resolve the industrial dispute that recently resulted in an indefinite strike by the Union.
NANS rescinded its position on Monday at its Senate's meeting held at the Kwara state College of Education, Ilorin. In a statement issued after the meeting, NANS national President, Chinonso Obasi stated that the economic downturn in the country was responsible for the cancellation of the earlier plan.
"NANS however refused to shut down the country on account of government’s inability to resolve the ongoing strike, within 21 days, citing the prevailing economic downturn in the country.”
Recall that NANS had issued a 21-day ultimatum to the Federal Government and ASUU to end the ongoing strike or risk widespread action. NANS called on both parties to engage in constructive dialogue to resolve the contentious issues that led to the declaration of the strike.
The national student's body also warned University lecturers against embarking on industrial action without due consultation with relevant stakeholders particularly NANS.
“As critical stakeholders in the education sector, it is imperative that ASUU consults NANS. Anytime ASUU wants to embark on strike, it is proper for them to consult student leaders led by NANS. ASUU should also apply other means of negotiation so that the strike will not have a direct negative impact on the students."
