FG Launches National Committee Against Torture

The Federal Government (FG) has launched the National Committee Against Torture (NCAT) in a bid to eliminate torture and inhuman and degrading treatment across the country. The Committee is made up of representatives from the Federal Ministry of Justice, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Legal Aids Council, Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Nigeria Police Force (NPF), Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS), Department of State Services (DSS), Nigerian Army (NA), Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), amongst others.

Kaduna-Train Hostage Negotiator Tukur Mamu, Arrested In Egypt

The lead negotiator who was involved in the controversial negotiation that led to the release of some of the Kaduna Train attack victims in March 2022, Alhaji Tukur Mamu has been arrested in Egypt on Tuesday. Alhaji Mamu, who is the Publisher of Desert Herald Newspaper in Kaduna was arrested and detained by Interpol at the Cairo International Airport while awaiting a connecting flight to Saudi Arabia. He was detained while in the company of his wives and another person for 24 hours and is being repatriated back to Nigeria. It was gathered that Mamu was released by Interpol after they found nothing incriminating in his possession. He is expected to arrive at the Aminu Kano International Airport in Kano on Wednesday and may be interrogated further by the Department of State Services (DSS).

Another Collapsed Building Injures Seven In Oyo State

At least seven persons were feared injured when an uncompleted four-storey hotel building collapsed in Ibadan, yesterday. The building located adjacent to one of the new generation banks at Awosika, Bodija area of Ibadan, Oyo state, reportedly collapsed early morning on Thursday around 5.45 a.m. A rescue team including people in the neighbourhood and passersby has succeeded in rescuing the seven people who are currently receiving medical attention at the University College Hospital Ibadan. Another combined team of the State Fire Service, Federal Road Safety Commission, and other security agencies has been deployed to the scene in the interest of public health and safety, as well as to minimize casualty rates.

Lagos Building Collapse: Commissioner Resigns, As Death Toll Rises

Meanwhile, The Lagos State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development Dr. Idris Salako, has resigned. Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, announced this in a statement on Monday.
The statement read in part, "This is a prelude to the restructuring of the Ministry and its agencies. "Governor Sanwo-Olu thanks the Commissioner for his services to the State and wishes him success in his future endeavours. "The Governor warns all players in the sector to respect the law or face the consequences of any indiscretion, no matter who the perpetrators are."
