The Academic Staff Union of Nigerian University, ASUU has extended its ongoing industrial action for another time. The decision to extend the strike action came after the National Executive Council of the academicians voted for the industrial to continue at the ASUU headquarters this morning in Abuja. After a series of debates and discussions by the ASUU for and against whether the industrial action should be extended until the federal government concedes to their demand, ASUU finally voted for the strike to continue.
The Academic staff of the Nigerian Universities commenced the industrial action on 14th February 2022 going to its seventh month now; the academicians have refused to shift ground after a series of discussions with the federal government on how to end the industrial action.
The spokesperson of the Federal Ministry of Education, Ben Goong, while speaking to punch News said that the ASUU has defiled all federal government efforts to end the industrial action.
In his statement, “As regards the next steps, the government has already inaugurated a committee to harmonize the IPPIS, UTAS, and UP3. This will ensure that the government will pay with only one payment platform that will harmonize all the technical peculiarities.
“If you bring some demands and almost 80% have been attended to, there is no need to drag the strike anymore.
He laments that it was unreasonable for the industrial action to linger for quite some time after a series of commitments the federal government has shown to end the industrial action.
In July 2022, President Muhammadu Buhari had given an express order to the minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu to ensure the strike action is brought to end, ASUU has remained adamant on its demand that it must all be fulfilled.
Meanwhile, the federal government is now appealing to parents to intervene by pleading with ASUU to reason that not all demand is met at the same time; they must take the option provided and end the strike so that students can go back to school.
