The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said that use of Google map while driving is not an offence contrary to a widespread allegation credited to the FRSC that it was an offence. Meanwhile, it remains dangerous to lunch the application while driving the statement added.
The spokesperson of the corps, Bisi Kazeem, made the statement while reacting to a report credited to NAN quoting one officer, Ayuba Gora of the Abuja FCT sector who said using Google map while driving was outlawed.
Kazeem said though driving with the aid of Google is not an offence, lunching the app while driving remains fatal.
He noted that the majority of road traffic crashes were as a result of the use of cell phones while driving.
According to him, they have been conducting a lot of symposiums and enlightenment campaigns on the prohibition of the use of cell phones while driving but it has continued to fall on deaf ear.
To make a clarification, he stated any driver who intends to deploy Google map while driving should do so prior to hitting the road, otherwise, it will be suicidal to deploy such while driving because it may lead to a road crash.
He further explains that according to the available statistics, the use of cell phone for either call, texting message, browsing and other related applications are the major source of the road accident.
He, therefore, call on the motorist to be mindful of using a cell phone while driving, saying this will reduce road traffic crashes.
He added as the yuletide season is fast approaching, there is going to be too much of travel on our highways, he urges motorist to take precautions while on the road.
