Pope Francis had a “quiet night” in the hospital after he was admitted for a respiratory infection on Wednesday, according to Italian news agency ANSA. He is expected to remain there for a few days for treatment. The agency quoted sources from the Gemelli University Hospital on Thursday morning that medical staff was “very optimistic’’ that the Pope could be back in the Vatican in just a few days, in time for Palm Sunday and ahead of what is a busy season for the Catholic leader. Pope Francis is due to celebrate Palm Sunday this weekend ahead of the Vatican's Holy Week observances: Holy Thursday; Good Friday; the Easter Vigil; and Easter Sunday on 9 April.
Earlier, on Wednesday, spokesman Matteo Bruni said Francis, 86, had complained of breathing problems in recent days.
“Pope Francis is touched by the many messages received and expresses his gratitude for the closeness and prayer.” the statement added.
The report added tests had ruled out heart problems and pneumonia.
A Vatican spokesman said he would have to stay for “a few days.” No further medical details were given.
He is also scheduled to visit Hungary at the end of April.
On Wednesday morning, he presided over his weekly general audience in St Peter’s Square. He appeared in good spirit but was seen grimacing as he was helped into his vehicle.
US President Joe Biden while reacting to the news, asked people to make an “extra prayer” for the Pope’s recovery.
Mr. Biden, who is the second Roman Catholic to be elected leader of the US, described the pontiff as one of the “most Christ-like figures I’ve ever met”.
