The Coach of Les Aigles of Mali, Alain Giresse on Thursday resigned his position following the country's woeful display in the ongoing Russia 2018 qualifying matches. His resignation came after the Malian team was hammered 6-0 by Morocco last week leaving the team with no chance of qualification from the group. Currently, Mali is on the bottom of the log with two points from three matches and five points behind group leaders Ivory Coast with two group games remaining.
The team's woeful display continued on Tuesday when Giresse's boys were held to a goalless situation at home by the visiting Moroccan team.
The President of Mali Football Federation, Boubacar Baba Diarra who confirmed his resignation said his decision was for security reasons, as the fans had become restive and could pose a security threat to him. "He is not in the right frame of mind to continue, plus there are concerns for his security,"
He also disclosed that the Federation had perfected plans to hold a crucial meeting today (Thursday) to appoint an interim manager that will superintend over the October 6 fixture against Ivory Coast in Bamako.
The 64-year-old Giresse had guided Mali to the third place of African Cup of Nation in 2012.
