As the race for the third citizen of the country draws to a close, Nigeria's current Senate leader, Ahmed Lawan has opined that he will bring a lot to the table and make a difference if elected in June. He made the assertion during a courtesy visit to Media Trust headquarters in Abuja yesterday.
Lawan revealed that as a lawmaker who will be marking his 20th year at the National Assembly, he believes he has all the requisite experience and capacity to lead the Senate in a manner that Nigerians would “have a better deal.”
The Senate leader went further to note that, as the adopted candidate of the ruling APC for the Senate president’s position, he would be meeting with other contenders for the position at the appropriate time to seek their understanding.
Lawan affirmed that if elected, he would ensure that the oversight functions of the National Assembly were strengthened and revolutionized in such a way that government agencies would be more accountable and transparent in their dealings.
The Senate leader said he and his campaign team have adopted a door-to-door approach, where they met with all senators-elect on a one-on-one basis to canvass for their support. He re-echoed his stance that the Senate would not be a rubber stamp of the Executive under him, noting that the two arms of government would often disagree but that he would not allow that to go to the market square.
