Acting President Yemi Osinbajo arrived Maiduguri to launch the Special Intervention Relief Plan for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the North East. The plan seeks to distribute about 30,000 metric tonnes that is over 1,032 trucks of cereals to those affected by the Boko Haram insurgency, in Borno, Yobe, Taraba, Adamawa, Gombe.
The visit is coming hours after Boko Haram insurgents raided the outskirts of Maiduguri, Borno State. The attack was successfully repelled by the Nigerian Army.
The acting president who was received at the airport by the state governors of Borno and Adamawa states visited the Palace of Shehu of Borno before arriving at the venue of the event. At the Palace, the Acting President reiterated President Muhammadu Buhari's "commitment to the welfare and wellbeing of IDPS, assuring that the government would continue to take measures to fully rehabilitate, empower and reintegrate displaced persons into the society".
The Acting President thereafter moved to the Bakassi IDP camp for the distribution of the relief materials. Each affected household is expected to receive rations based on calculations of 6 persons per household. Food ration per individual for 30 days stands at 280 grams x 30 days/1000 = 8.4kg, so each household will receive 50.4 kg of cereals.
Under the special intervention relief plan, bags of grains will be distributed to IDPs on a quarterly basis.
