The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released the timetable and schedule of activities for the recall of the Senator, representing Kogi West Senatorial District, Senator Dino Melaye.
In the release signed by the Commission’s Secretary, Mrs. Augusta Ogwakwu, the electoral body said the action was in exercise of the powers conferred on it by the constitution and the electoral Act.
The statement which was released Monday evening reads:
“In exercise of the powers conferred on the Independent National Electoral Commission (“the Commission”) by sections 69 and 110 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended); section 116 of the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended), and all other powers enabling it in that behalf, the Commission hereby issues this timetable and schedule of activities for the recall of the Senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District, Kogi State.”
According to the timetable, notice of verification will be posted at the Constituency (INEC LGA office Lokoja), on 10th July, 2017, while 31st July is the last day for the submission of application by interested observers at the INEC Headquarters.
The Verification exercise will take place on 19th August, 2017 in all Polling Units in the Constituency followed immediately by the declaration of the outcome of the verification exercise at the INEC LGA Office, Lokoja.
Senator Melaye is facing a recall by his Constituency for what they termed “his embarrassment of the constituency and underperformance.
However, many blame the move on his frosty relationship with the State governor, who has come under severe criticism by the Senator for mismanagement of the State funds and poor leadership.
Governor Bello is believed to be sponsoring the recall attempt in collaboration with Senator Smart Adeyemi, who lost to Melaye in the 2015 senatorial election and stands to benefit should the recall process prove successful.
