The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa revealed that he has been receiving death threats since he was appointed the chairman of the commission.
He stated this on Tuesday morning when he was interviewed on Channels Television’s ‘Sunrise Daily’ program.
Bawa said, “Last week, I was in New York, as all Nigerians are aware of. A very senior citizen received a phone call from somebody that is not even under investigation. What he (the caller) said to him on phone is that; he is going to kill the EFCC chairman, the young man.
“He said, ‘I am going to kill him. I am going to kill him. This is to tell you how bad it is. It is actually real. Corruption can fight back.”
Bawa also revealed that the civil service had many loopholes, especially in contract processing, where certain agencies claim “emergency contracts” as an avenue to loot funds.
The chairman of the anti-graft agency however stated that the commission has several strategies to checkmate corruption, one of which is corruption risk assessments of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies.
Bawa also disclosed that 90 percent of money laundering is done via the real estate sector, which is currently being monitored by a special control unit of the commission.
In February 2021, President Buhari named 40-year-old Bawa as the new EFCC chairman to replace the ex-acting chairman of the commission, Ibrahim Magu.
