Following the proposed reform in the teaching profession that is being proposed by the Buhari administration, the Federal Government has vowed to only henceforth engage the first class and second class upper graduates to teach. The government said teachers without requisite qualifications would not be considered for teaching jobs.
This was stated by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Sunny Echono during the conduct of the 2020 October Diet Batch B Teachers’ Professional Qualification Examination (PQE).
In his statement, “By 2021, we will not engage teachers if they don’t meet a particular threshold. We are now limiting the entry point of teaching only to the best that is qualified. We will engage individuals with second class upper and first-class divisions,”
According to him, the arrangement would be put in place to accommodate conversion of such graduates, saying since most causes studied by many is a non-teaching one, and therefore, they need to learn pedagogy and methodology through the
National Teachers Institute (NTI) and the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN).
He explained that such persons would undergo specific programs that will make them suitable for teaching programs in line with Mr. President's directive of only qualifies teachers should have access to teaching.
He revealed that afterward, Teachers' remuneration would be enhanced with peculiar allowance to make the job attractive.
He disclosed that currently, the government is finalizing figures with National Income Salaries and Wages.
The Permanent Secretary said within this month, the National Implementation Committee on Teachers’ Revitalization/Resuscitation Plan will be inaugurated.
