The Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University in Russian has successfully completed the World's first clinical trials for the COVID-19 vaccine on humans. The Director of the Institute for Translational Medicine and Biotechnology, Vadim Tarasov said the vaccine was produced by Gamalei Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology on June 18, 2020.
According to Sputnik, the nation's media platform, Tarasov said the trial was conducted in two batches of 38 volunteers with the first batch set to be discharged on Wednesday and the second batch on July 20.
"Sechenov University has successfully completed tests on volunteers of the world’s first vaccine against coronavirus", Tarasov said.
Following the COVID-19 pandemic, countries began racing to develop a cure for the virus which has negatively impacted the economic, health, and social industry across the world.
Countries working to find a cure include UK, US, China, India, Germany, Brazil among others.
Currently, there are at least 19 vaccines under trial worldwide with 2 firms in the third trial phase.
The firms are the Chinese company Sinovac and the UK-based firm AstraZeneca.
