The Federal Government has today commenced the enrolment of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members for National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). The scheme was tailored to be under the Group Individual and Family Social Health Insurance Program and was initiated to guarantee access to quality health services for the corps members nationwide.
Speaking during the flag-off of the exercise today in Abuja, the NYSC Director-General, DG, Major General Shuaibu Ibrahim, revealed, “For effective implementation of this scheme, six (6) Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs) have been carefully selected after a competitive process for each of the six geopolitical zones to drive the process.
The DG explained that “To ensure a seamless arrangement devoid of encumbrances, corps members are expected to register under Health Care Practitioners in their localities. It is therefore my expectation that both the HMOs and Health Care Providers will approach this insurance scheme with the highest degree of responsibility and integrity.
He explained that on their part, the management of the corps members would do all it takes by ensuring all those that have roles to playing the initiative ensure is done with great enthusiasm to meet expectations of the government. And to achieve that, he directed that the Corps Welfare and Health Services Department of NYSC ensure strict monitoring of HMOs in line with the NHIS laws to ensure they get the best services.
In his remarks, the Executive Secretary (ES) of NHIS, Prof. Mohammed Nasir Gambo, described the initiative as a good move in a good direction as it has the capability of securing the well-being of our youth corps members in the country.
Reacting, the NYSC Welfare Director, Omotosho Folorunsho, explained that to the package is a lot of benefits attached as it covers pre-orientation, Orientation, place of Primary Assignment (PPA) as well as the terminal period for the service year of every corps member.
