Myanmar’s parliament elected Aung San Suu Kyi’s confidant Win Myint as the country’s new president on Wednesday, a week after predecessor Htin Kyaw abruptly stepped down from the position. Both houses of parliament voted the ruling party National League for Democracy (NLD) stalwart into the position with 403 votes from the 636 lawmakers.

North Korea’s Kim Jong Un made his first-ever foreign trip as leader to meet China’s president in Beijing, the official Xinhua news agency said Wednesday, ahead of proposed summits with Seoul and Washington that could unsettle nuclear-armed Pyongyang’s sole ally. During the visit from Sunday to Wednesday which came at the invitation of Xi Jinping, Kim held talks with the Chinese president who hosted a banquet to welcome the North Korean leader and his wife Ri Sol Ju, Xinhua said.

Sergei Mavrodi, 63-year-old Russian businessman, who’s MMM pyramid scheme deprived millions of Russians of their savings in the 1990s, has died of a heart attack, according to Russia media. Reports said the 62-year-old was rushed to the hospital late on March 25 with pain in his chest and died several hours later.

Kuwait is to hire about 2,000 expatriate medical personnel for new hospitals and clinics, the daily newspaper Kuwait Times has said on Wednesday. The Ministry of Health of Kuwait has prepared a memo on its needs of doctors and technical medical staff who should be hired to operate new hospitals and clinics, the newspaper quoted an informed source as saying, noting that the memo has been sent to the Kuwaiti Civil Service Commission (CSC) for approval.

Saudi Arabia is partnering with Japanese investment giant SoftBank to create the world’s largest solar power generation project in the kingdom, aiming to spend $200bn by 2030. Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and SoftBank chief executive Masayoshi Son signed a preliminary agreement for a series of solar parks throughout the kingdom with a generation capacity of 200 gigawatts, enough to power 150m homes.

Myanmar will hold presidential election on Wednesday, one week after President Htin Kyaw abruptly resigned from his position, parliament announced on Monday. Htin Kyaw said he wanted to “take a rest” from his current work after becoming Myanmar’s head of state in March 2016, the first civilian leader after over a half-century of military rule.
