Mali Names Ex-defence Minister Ba N'Daou As Interim President

Following the coup that Mali's ex-president Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, Mali has on Monday announced Ba N'Daou, former defence minister as president of the new transition government, Colonel Assimi Goita, leader of the National Committee for the Salvation of the People (CNSP) said.

The new president alongside his vice, Goita are to be inaugurated on September 25, after which the president is expected to lead for several months before an election is conducted in a bid for Mali to return to civilian rule.

N'daou and Goita were appointed by a group of 17 people carefully selected by the military to oversee and ensure a smooth transition within the period of 18 months before the elections.

The new president former military personnel who received training at Paris' Ecole de Guerre and the former Soviet Union was once an aide-de-camp to late ex-dictator Moussa Traore.
