Popular filmmaker, Fidelis Duker, has distant the movie industry from being responsible for ritual killing that has become the order of the day amongst the Nigerian youth in recent times. Duker, also an Executive Director of the Abuja International Film Festival, while charting with ‘Sunday Beats’ said that to a large extent, he differs from the present generation of the Nigerian youth that has gone wild in ritual killing, commonly known as ‘Yahoo plus’ amongst young people between the age bracket of 17-26.
He disagrees with the notion that such youth are driving their inspiration from the Nollywood movies, saying as even those presented in the movies as ritualists end up paying a huge price for their misadventure.
Duker blamed the trend on the dearth of moral values and poor parenting as some of the reasons for the malaise.
He said, “In a recent Facebook post, I said one of the causes is that we have lost our moral values. A child of 17 years old would bring a new car home and the mother would be celebrating it. What work has he done at 17? A girl in year one in a tertiary institution would be using an IPhone11 of about N500,000, and one begins to wonder where she got the money from? Those are the issues we should look at. We should not look for an escape route and blame Nollywood films (for all these ills).” He concludes.
