The Nigerian government has ordered a probe of past heads of the Nigeria Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMSA) and the Joint Admissions and Matriculating Board (JAMB), over suspicion of massive fraud.
Minister of Finance Mrs. Kemi Adeosun told State House correspondents, shortly after the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on Wednesday that the investigation of the agencies became necessary in the light of the recent remittance of the sum N5 billion to the account of the Federal Government by the present leadership of JAMB.
This, she noted was in sharp contrast to the paltry N3 million remitted to the Federal Government’s coffers in 2015 by the same agency under its former boss.
She noted that the present leadership of JAMB has promised to remit additional N3 billion to the government.
“Council felt this is unacceptable. They want to know where the monies have been going in the past. It is not that their revenue drive is different from what they have now. So Council wants to know what has been happening to the monies they have been generating. It is in line with this that Council has directed that we look into the books of these agencies,” the minister said.
According to her, the council has also mandated the investigation of other revenue generating agencies in the country to ascertain their level of transparency and accountability.
