The Pentagon's official Twitter account on Thursday (16 November) briefly retweeted a post calling for President Donald Trump to resign before quickly deleting it.
The official US Defense Department account retweeted a post by a person going by the Twitter handle @ProudResister that urged Trump to resign from the presidency, Republican Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore to end his campaign, and for Democratic Senator Al Franken to resign from Congress.
"The solution is simple," the post read. "Roy Moore: Step down from the race. Al Franken: Resign from Congress. Donald Trump: Resign from the presidency. GOP: Stop making sexual assault a partisan issue. It's a crime as is your hypocrisy."
The Defense Department's account has more than 5.2 million followers.
Pentagon spokesman Col. Rob Manning said in a statement that the authorised operator of the Defense Department's Twitter account "erroneously retweeted content that would be endorsed by the Department of Defense. The operator caught his error and immediately deleted it."
Chief Pentagon spokeswoman Dana White tweeted out the same statement as well.
While many Twitter accounts specifically mention a disclaimer that retweets do not constitute an endorsement, the Pentagon's @DeptofDefense account does not.
The "erroneous" retweet comes just weeks after a rogue Twitter employee temporarily deactivated Trump's @realDonaldTrump account for several minutes.
