5G Network: NCC Set To Formulate Policies To Regulate Its Possible Arrival And Operations

The Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) has disclosed readiness to partner with stakeholders to formulate policies that will drive the 5th generation (5G) mobile network in the country.

The Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, Prof. Umar Danbatta, revealed this on Wednesday during a virtual innovative tech forum organized by the Nigeria Information Technology Reporters Association (NITRA).

The event titled, ‘Multi-Stakeholders Approach to National Recovery Post-Pandemic’.

Danbatta revealed that the stakeholders that would constitute the forum would include; the Federal Ministry of Communication and Digital Economy, Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), and the office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).

He further explained that other members expected to work with the commission on the 5G policy were Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), the Academia, Association of Licensed Telecommunication Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), and Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) among others.

In his statement which partly reads; “Our goal is that when the Federal Government is able to establish a policy that will drive 5G, all the benefits of 5G will be properly harnessed by Nigerians.

“The Commission is also working to ensure the safety of 5G networks in Nigeria by having a multi-stakeholder approach in environmental impact analysis on the use of 5G and the Electromagnetic Fields (EMF) impact on humans in Nigeria.

Danbatta continued, “Once this is done, Nigerians can safely utilize 5G and reap the entire economic, human and material benefits of 5G,”
He explained that the economic benefit that would come with the 5G network would be huge, considering the post-pandemic era which has made many businesses suffers setbacks; the platform would provide the online medium for such businesses.

Danbatta disclosed that the 5G network would usher an improved network for Nigerians as it is set to connect all machines and virtually everything like objects and devices.
It would give rise to a superfast internet for things and turn around innovations with better opportunities for artificial intelligence.
