Contrary to warnings from the Nigerian Police Force and the Office of the National Security Adviser, the Nigerian Senate on Tuesday passed the Bill seeking the establishment of Nigerian Peace Corps as one of the Para-military agencies in the country.
The Senate passed the Bill after adopting the conference report submitted by the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters. The Senate had suspended further consideration of the Bill after the harmonized version was presented during plenary. The harmonization was done by both the Senate and the House of Representatives.
The bill will now be forwarded to the President for assent after the Green Chamber passes same.
It is however not clear if the President will sign the Bill into law given the stiff opposition to the establishment of a brand new security outfit.
