The local government election in Delta State that initially started peacefully turned violent following a reported attack on the Ughelli office of the State’s Independent Electoral Commission.
At least three persons have been injured and the office of the Delta State Independent Electoral Commission razed.
Eyewitnesses told Channels Television that the building was set on fire by angry youths who are alleging that they have been disenfranchised.
The State Independent Electoral Commission had been expected to announce the result of the election later on Saturday after counting of ballot papers and collation of results from all the 25 local government areas.
The announcement has since been shifted severally as the electoral commission struggles to keep to its promise, with bye-elections looking very likely at Ughelli North and Ethiope East LGAs.
Meanwhile, police in the State on Saturday confirmed the death of an ad hoc staff of electoral commission deployed to Onicha-Ugbo, Aniocha North Local Government Area of the state.
The state police public relations officer, Andree Aniamaka, said the yet-to-be-identified ad-hoc staff slumped and died shortly after delivering the voting materials in a voting centre at Onicha-Ugbo area of the state.
