The Federal Government says it is disappointed over the decision of the United States (US) President, Donald Trump to withdraw the US from the 2015 Paris Climate Change Agreement.
The spokesperson of the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Clement Adaku who made the position of government known maintained that "...the Federal Republic of Nigeria wishes to express its disappointment with the decision of the United States of America to pull out of the Paris Accord on Climate Change."
Adaku who explained that the deal was reached for the common good of humanity added that the country would "continue to implement its own commitment to the deal".
The US President had last week Thursday announced his decision to withdraw the US from the pact, claiming that the deal was unfair to America and her citizens. He further lamented that "nations asking the US to stay in the agreement are the same nations that cost America trillions of Dollars through unfair trade agreements, while contributing nothing to military alliances". He expressed optimism that the US would renegotiate the deal in terms more beneficial to the US.
The main crux of the agreement entered into by about 195 countries in 2015 is to reduce greenhouse gas emission to limit the global temperature increase. During the pre-agreement conference, individual countries agreed and outlined actions they intended to take within the shortest possible time to achieve the gains of the agreement. The US had agreed to commit over $3 trillion to the agreement.
Meanwhile, world leaders including those of Germany, United Kingdom, France and Canada have condemned US decision, threatening to block possible request for renegotiation of the pact.
