Nigeria is soliciting for comprehensive reforms particularly in the UN Security Council to reflect equitable representation of Africa in Permanent Membership category. The Nigerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Geoffrey Onyeama stated this in Abuja at a press briefing on Nigeria’s agenda for the 72nd United Nations General Assembly, taking place in New York, United States.
“Africa must be adequately represented on the Security Council in the Permanent Membership category,” he said.
According to Mr. Onyeama, Nigeria stands ready to serve Africa and the world in advancing international peace and security.
“The United Nations must scale up its process of change and reforms to strengthen its delivery capacity to meet new demands and deliver its vital services in the most effective and efficient manner. The contemporary call for the reforms of the UN Security Council is for a transparent accountable Council,” Mr. Onyeama explained.
Mr. Onyeama said Nigeria will seek the support of members of the international community to eradicate the residual traces of terrorism in the North-east of the country.
“Government’s efforts have resulted in the release of over a 100 school girls kidnapped by Boko Haram in Chibok in 2014; we will call for continued international support to ensure safe release and return of the remaining school girls.”
Another agenda is the continual agitation for the repatriation of proceeds of illicit Financial Assets to countries.
“During the 71st UNGA Session, Nigeria co-sponsored the resolution of the repatriation of illicit financial asset to countries of origin. At the 72nd Session; the country will follow up on the resolution and call for international cooperation to combat illicit financial flows and enhance asset recovery to foster sustainable development,” Mr Onyeama stated.
