President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday 20th June 2019 inaugurated the National Economic Council (NEC), tasking members to initiate strategies that will strengthen, enhance cooperation across States and further promote joint deliberations.
The council was established by the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999), with the mandate to advise the president on the economic policy of the country and in particular, coordinate the economic planning efforts, and programmes of the three- tiers of Government.
Its membership is made up of all state governors and members of the ruling Administration’s Economic Management Team with the Vice President as Chairman.
During the inauguration, President Muhammadu Buhari tasked the council to brainstorm on Nigeria's current economic challenges and come up with initiatives that would bring lasting peace to the country.
It would be recalled that the last NEC held an unprecedented total of 38 meetings, setting up 10 Ad-Hoc Committees, in the process to address the various issues of national concern.
