President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday summoned and queried the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris over disobedience to his directive to relocate to Benue state in the awake of New Year attack that claimed over seventy lives. The presidency in a series of tweets posted yesterday stated that the IGP was directed to provide comprehensive report on police operations in the affected states, after which further actions would be taken.
The tweets read;
“Pres @MBuhari today summoned the Inspector-General of Police to explain his flouting of the presidential order to remain in Benue State. The President has also asked for a comprehensive report on Police Operations in the affected States,after which further decisions will be made. We would like to restate our determination to ensure that the attacks and killings are brought to an end, and perpetrators to justice.
President @MBuhari’s Visit to the affected States continues, following the Trips to Taraba and Benue. Next are Yobe, Zamfara and Rivers States."
Recall that the President on Monday during his official visit to Benue state said he was unaware that the IGP flouted his directive by failing to relocate to Benue to halt the continued killings by suspected Fulani herdsmen.
His statement has elicited reactions with some opposition politicians exploiting it for political capital. Some claimed that the President's statement suggests that he is not in charge of the affairs of the country.
Meanwhile, the National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi has said the President was being sincere about the situation, stressing that his statement should not be misconstrued to mean that he is not in charge.
