President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday held a closed-door meeting with the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, Mr. Musiliu Smith and the Inspector General of the Police, Mr. Muhammed Adamu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Smith, a former Inspector-General of Police, attended the meeting in the company of other members of the commission.
Also in attendance is the Chief of Staff to the President, Abba Kyari. Although Punch reports that the agenda is said to be the 2018 annual report of the PSC, a source in the presidency said the meeting is not unconnected with the ongoing controversial recruitment of 10,000 constables.
Last week, the President summoned the Minister of Police Affairs, Muhammadu Dingyadi and the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, to resolve the dispute over recruitment exercise.
Recall that despite the suspension of the recruitment exercise by the PSC, the police had released the list of successful candidates who had been directed to report for medical screening between September 9 and 14 at zonal police headquarters.
Vigil360 gathered that the Commission had earlier written to the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, seeking clarification on the constitutional role of the Commission in respect of recruitment into the Police Force. Although the Ministry had replied in favor of the Commission, the Police Chief remained adamant. The IGP had claimed that he knew the needs of the Force and should be allowed to talent spot candidates that would meet the address the gap in the Force.
