Northern Nigeria Gets Its First University Of Education

The National University Commission (NUC) has approved the upgrade of the Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto to be henceforth recognized as Sokoto State University of Education. The approval came as the 58th of its kind as a state University and 206th university in Nigeria. The Executive Secretary of the NUC, Prof. Adamu Rasheed while presenting the recognition certificate to the Sokoto State governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal in Abuja, said the Shehu Shagari University is now the first University of Education in Northern Nigeria also the 4th of its kind in the whole country.


In his appreciation, the Governor said the university is a specialized one where the state intends to maximize entrepreneurship functional and effectiveness in the education curriculum. 

Tambuwal revealed, “The University will produce graduates that will be self-reliant and create employment to help in empowerment and human capital development of the people of Sokoto State.” 

According to him, the University has already passed the recommendation for the upgrade before the Sokoto state House of Assembly as the
the state government has adhered strictly to the recommendation issued by the NUC and subsequent documentation. 

Meanwhile, he makes the commitment to financial assistance that will put the school on the right track for excellence.
