The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the issuance of provisional licenses for the establishment of 12 new private universities nationwide. The memo for the establishment of the universities was presented to the Council by the Minister of State, Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba on behalf of the National Universities Commission (NUC). This was disclosed on Wednesday by the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed at the end of the Council’s meeting which was presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari.
According to the minister, the proposed private universities are Pen Resource University, Gombe State; Al-Ansar University, Borno State; Margaret Lawrence University, Delta State; Sports University, Delta State and Khalifa Ishaku Rabiu University, Kano State.
Others are Bala Ahmed University, Kano State; Saisa University of Medical Sciences and Technology, Sokoto State; Nigerian-British University, Abia State; Peter University, Anambra State; Newgate University, Niger State; European University of Nigeria, Abuja and North West University, Sokoto State.
He said the new universities would be supervised by the old universities closest to them on “recruitment of principal officers, academic and administrative staff; availability of human and material resources for commencement of academic programmes; implementation of carrying capacity; staff development; moderation of students’ examination and results; general quality assurance activities; moderation of admission and external examination moderation.”
