The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has detained and is questioning a former governor of Edo State, Lucky Igbenidion over an alleged diversion of N1.6bn of public funds. The spokesman of EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren confirmed this development but declined to make any further comment. The ex-governor arrived at EFCC’s headquarters, Jabi, Abuja on Thursday at around 2 pm.
In 2008, shortly after his tenure as Edo State governor, Igbinedion was convicted of embezzling N2.9billion owned by Edo State.
After pleading guilty, he was convicted of corruption and sentenced to six months’ imprisonment.
According to a source, the commission obtained fresh evidence that during his tenure, Igbinedion diverted a loan obtained by the Edo State Government to settle the debt of a company in which he has an interest.
