The Ministry of Health has revealed that a fresh outbreak of cholera have killed up to four persons while 38 others have been infected in Shege Word, Toto Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.
According to Public Relations Officer, state Ministry of Health, Mr. Musa Abdullahi, some of the affected victims are currently stable and responding to treatment.
The state commissioner of Health, Dr. Daniel Iya, who was represented by the state Director of Public Health, Dr. Ibrahim Adamu-Alhassan made donation of relevant drugs to the Shege community. He said the donation was part of the state government's ongoing intervention to halt further spread of the disease.
Dr. Alhassan while leading a team of health experts from the ministry revealed that they were in Shege to treat those infected with the disease and also to stop its spread to other parts of the state.
He stressed that part of the team’s mandate was to support the community health workers in the area to improve on their skills and to also sensitise them on the need for swift respond to any new infection.
"I admonish all the community members to observe personal and family hygiene such as proper and regular hand washing, appropriate disposal of sewage and other waste, boiling and treating water before drinking, among others," he said.
Abdullahi however, tasked the community health workers to increase monitoring around the communities and provide information on sanitation, personal hygiene and healthy food preparation practices.
Responding, the Interim Management Committee Chairman of Toto LGA, Mr. Adamu Dauda-Nuhu; and village head of Shege, Alkali Adunga, applauded Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura for his quick response to the predicament of their people and called for provision of a motorised borehole to tackle the lack of potable water supply which the community suffer from.
