The United Kingdom (UK) has commenced the implementation of the ban on foreign health workers and caregivers from bringing dependants. This development was made known on Monday in a post issued from the official X (formerly Twitter) account of the UK Home Office, which also stated it would increase the minimum income threshold for skilled workers to 38,700 GBP.
The post reads, “We are delivering on our plan for the biggest-ever cut in migration.
“Overseas care workers brought an estimated 120,000 dependants to the UK in the year ending September 2023. Today we’ve put a stop to this.”
The rate of migration to the UK has risen to record levels especially after the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic.
In an effort to curtail the sharp rise of migration, the UK government has introduced several policies such as overseas students cannot switch from “out of the student route” to work routes before the completion of their studies, improved enforcement activity, amongst other policies.
