Chief Richard Akinjide who was Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice during the Second Republic has died on Tuesday after a long protracted illness, his daughter and former Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Jumoke Akinjide confirmed the death.

Akinjide who died at early hours of Tuesday morning at his residence in Ibadan, Oyo State suffered complications from the illness and was later taken to University College Hospital (UCH).


The Ex-AGF, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) studied law in the United Kingdom and was called to Bar in the UK in 1955. He later returned to Nigeria and was called to the Nigerian Bar before establishing his law firm, Akinjide and Co.


Akinjide was a Minister of Education during the First Republic of Tafawa Balewa and AGF and Minister of Justice during the second republic, under Shehu Shagari.
