Netflix has on Friday premiered it first original made-in-Africa series, Queen Sono, a six-episode TV thriller starring South Africa's Pearl Thusi as a spy.
Queen Sono was created and directed by satirist and actor, Kagiso Lediga.
Dorothy Ghettuba, Netflix Africa manager said the six-part project was "a gripping action pact thriller (that) … follows the life of Queen Sono, a highly trained secret spy who works for South Africans."
"There are so many stories, there are so many great filmmakers on the continent, I can’t wait to see what comes up after this,” she noted.
The series shot in over 35 locations including Zanzibar (Tanzania), Nigeria, Kenya and South Africa.
Speaking on the production, Thusi said this project is uplifting and empowering as it allows Africa to tell its own stories.
She said, "Controlling the narrative is really important because we're tired of seeing, particularly, just struggle stories."
“I have always been the face of a strong African woman; it’s not new to me but I’m now representing a character on screen who is, I think reflecting all the women in Africa that are strong, black African women,” Thusi said.
The first episode premiered in South Africa, Nigeria wasn't left behind as it also premiered today in Lagos, with the theatre packed.
