20 Million Gionee Smartphones Infected With Virus

A court in China recently released its verdict in a case against Chinese smartphone maker, Gionee. The court found Gionee guilty of intentionally planting a Trojan Horse virus via an app on more than 20 million devices between December 2018 and October 2019. The Trojan Horse was planted via a software update using “Story Lock Screen” app and was carried out by a subsidiary of Gionee, The Shenzen Zhipu Technology Co. Ltd. According to reports, the app was used to profit from users without the knowledge of the user. The company earned about $4 million between December 2018 and October 2019 from infecting 26,519,921 smartphones with the Trojan Horse virus.

American Multinational Technology company, Microsoft Corporation has on Thursday announced that the company will be assisting corporate businesses to understand how to manage scattered data through the operation of their new cloud-based tool.
The tool "Azure Purview' will be similar to last year's 'Azure Synapse' used by companies like FedEx which analyses the flow of 16 million daily packages. However, the new tool will analyze large data to help businesses understand information and its location in their database.

FG: Digital Assessment Adopted For Civil Servants

The Federal Government has concluded plans to drop its current Annual Performance Evaluation Report (APER) used to assess civil servants and would adopt a more digital platform to evaluate staff performance. This was disclosed to journalists on Monday by the Head of The Civil Service of the Federation, Folasade Yemi-Esan at the start of a three-day service-wide training program for staff on Performance Management System.

In a bid to further protect people from cyber-attacks through the use of unsecured public internet networks (wi-fi), American multinational technology company, Google has introduced a new Virtual Private Network (VPN) by Google One, providing Android phone users with extra online protection. VPN is a built-in tool that masks your internet protocol (IP) address, giving the user anonymity online by creating a private network from a public (Wi-Fi) network connection. However, the VPN by Google One is available for users who have subscribed for 2 terabytes (2TB) and higher internet data plans, the Economic Times of India noted.

The Italian Antitrust Authority has on Monday disclosed that it has fined American tech giant, Apple Inc. 10 million Euros ($12 million) for "aggressive and misleading" commercial practices regarding the iPhones. According to Reuters, the Italian regulatory agency made this known in a statement, saying the tech company advertised some iPhone models to be water-resistant when in the real sense the phones do not work underwater.

WhatsApp has announced the introduction of a new ‘disappearing or ephemeral messages’ option this month. This feature would allow users of the app to mark messages, photos, and videos, which would be automatically deleted after 7 days. The company said, “We’re starting with 7 days because we think it offers peace of mind that conversations aren’t permanent while, remaining practical so you don’t forget what you were chatting about.” The 7-day limit exists whether or not the message gets read and it starts the moment the message is sent, users can still copy text or take screenshots of the messages within the 7 day period.

The Ministry of Youth and Sports Development is set to expand its digital skills training by involving 500,000 youths nationwide as part of the COVID-19 stimulus budget. The digital skill training titled: ‘A New DEEL for the Nigerian Youth’ is aimed at empowering Nigerian youth towards the digitization agenda of the country and further economic growth. This was disclosed in a statement on Thursday made by The Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Mr. Sunday Dare. The statement read in part, ”Through the stimulus plan budget under President Muhammadu Buhari, we can now implement 65 and 75 percent of DEEL concentrating on digital skills acquisition to bridge the existing gap we have in the area of technology.
