Premier League clubs have voted against introducing video technology next season. Video assistant referee (VAR) has been used in some FA Cup and League Cup ties, but has often resulted in controversy and confusion. Premier League clubs rejected the introduction of VAR for the 2018/2019 at a meeting to be held today.
Representatives of all 20 English top-flight clubs voted at a quarterly shareholders meeting today, and according to the Telegraph it will be a major shock if a decision is taken to allow the Video Assistant Referee system to be rolled out for the next EPL campaign.
Premier League executives are said to be concerned by the controversy surrounding VAR after it was trialled during this seasons FA and Carabao Cup competitions.
However, clubs are expected to give the go ahead to extended trails on certain match days next season.
VAR is set to be used during this summer World Cup and Premier League chiefs are though to be eager to see how this goes before making any final decision on introducing it to their own league.
Today’s meeting is also significant due to the fact the distribution of television money will also be discussed.
It is expected that the Premier League’s top six club’s Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool and Spurs will once again try to bid for a higher portion of TV money than the so called smaller sides.
